You'll Be the Only One to Rock this African Bangle

This African bangle is absolutely one-of-a-kind. It's made of horn and is truly a collaboration in artistic styles. I gave it the contemporary twist by adding Swarovski crystals and a beautiful stone to this bangle. Sorry can't remember the name of the stone. The bangle actually has 3 of these stones with crystals.

It's very earthy, organic and substantial.

Here's the link to my online boutique where you can see more details about this one-of-a-kind African bangle: http://www.newyorkaccents.com/falwhieaba12-7.html

This bag is made of jute with a cotton rope handle. It's great to take to the market for light weight items, take your lunch to work in and to wear as an everyday casual tote.

Biodynamic Greens---Super Tasty Kale!

Today for the 1st time I bought kale from a bioydnamic farmer---Cowberry Crossing Farm and had no expectations on taste. I normally buy chicken and meat from them but for whatever reason, I had not thought of buying veggies from them.

Biodynamic food is absolutely the best in my opinion. With a focus on harmony throughout the farm and mineral rich soil, this farming practice is beyond regular organic practices.

All that I can say is OMG!!! I've never tasted kale this good. My BF says it was clean, sweet and rich. Not bitter at all. Now, I know that there are different varieties of kale but I've had this long flat kind before from other non-biodynamic farmers and of course, the regular USDA organic from the grocery store and seriously, non can compare.

Since I still have a lot left, I'm hoping that keeping them in spring water will help to keep them fresh until me and BF can consume it all. There's no way that I'm letting this go to waste. Not a chance!

Now I see why children don't like greens. If they're from a can, or from a farmer who's goal is not to farm with mineral rich soil then this could be a major factor. They simply don't taste good. No matter how they're seasoned.

If you're in the Hudson Valley in NY definitely check out Cowberry Crossing Farm. They're food is the BEST! FYI-I did a post about their farm last year, Buy Healthy Food & Shop with Confidence. Check them out. Their beef is AMAZING!

If you're not in the Hudson Valley area, definitely check out your local farmer's market and see if any of the farmers practice biodynamic farming.

Feel Good After Eating Nuts & Seeds–Reduce Phytic Acid

Ever experience bloating or other issues after consuming nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, grains? If the bulk of your diet consists of much of the above then you may want to consider soaking these foods before consuming.

Why soak? These foods contain high levels phytic acid which interferes with our bodies ability to digest & absorb the nutrients & minerals in these foods. This extra step is actually a small effort that can make a BIG difference in how you feel after consuming these foods. You want to be able to enjoy your food without feeling bad afterwards, right?
I know about this stomach bloating issue very well. I used to eat a ton of raw nuts and seeds when I was on the raw vegan diet. I knew about the benefits of soaking but for some reason it just didn't sink in back then. After consuming them just like clock work, I would get a bloated stomach.

These days, within the last 2 years, I'm totally out of that lazy spell that I had in regards to food preparation for maximum benefit. My personal results are proof that taking a little bit of prep work before consumption is worth it. Also, every time that I see the gunky residue from the soaked nuts, reminds me that I should never eat them raw.

These jars of raw almonds were soaked for 24 hours in spring water. The jar on the left was rinsed 4 times. The other jar had not been rinsed yet.

What became of those almonds that I soaked? Pan roasted almonds and homemade almond butter. D-e-l-i-s-h!

There's just no comparison to the ease of digestion and the taste of soaked nuts with further roasting in a saturated fat. My choice of fat for the almonds was lard which further helps with digestion. I'm talking un-rendered lard that was bought from the farmer's market and rendered at home.

So go ahead, try this small step. I'm curious to know if you feel a difference.

Want more detailed info about phytic acid? Here's another post that I did with more details: http://funwithfashion-healthylife.blogspot.com/2013/06/could-phytic-acid-be-cause-of-stomach.html#.UlNft80_fMc

Seed Milk: Living Food for Health & Beauty

What makes this a living food?

It's enzyme rich due to soaking seeds overnight which activates the enzymes.

Enzymes are our life force.

This drink does more than make you healthy. I've personally noticed when I drink this regularly, my facial skin becomes super soft and little brown spots disappear. This could be the next big beauty secret!

I learned about seed milk from Carol Wachniak. Her article, "Jump Start" states: "living food increase the absorption of nutrients and increase the release of toxins from the cells."

A Day at the Farmer's Market---Tarrytown, NY

I enjoyed having "Be Empowered! Be Forever Beautiful" featured at the Tarrytown farmer's market today. It was a great way to meet neighbors that I would never had met. I also met a few tourists out enjoying the day.

The weather was nice, the musician was really good and the crowd was truly beautiful.

Today's event reminded me of the importance of being social offline. I appreciate the online social networks but meeting you in person is 1,000 times better.

Thank you Down to Earth Markets for a wonderful day!

Natural Lipstick for Luscious Lips!

I'm a big fan of Ecco Bella lipstick because there's no chemicals in it. Our body absorbs what we put on it so do we really want to use cosmetics with known chemicals on our precious face?

There are safer options!

In this video, Anna Cangiano owner of Au Naturel Health and Beauty in Tarrytown, NY gives us a tour of the Ecco Bella makeup collection.

My tip for buying cosmetics:

Even within an "all natural" brand it's wise to check out the ingredients list on each product to make sure it's A-OK!

Have you tried natural make up? If so what's your fav brand?

Bell Peppers for Beautiful Skin?

Today's market find was an array of bell peppers. I had never seen purple or black bell peppers before.

Bell peppers are high in vitamin C. According to WHFoods.com, bell peppers are the second highest food with vitamin C behind papaya.

bell peppers, vitamin c

Regarding beauty, having vitamin C in your diet is great for facial skin elasticity.

According to Naturalnews.com:

"Collagen and elastin are the two main reasons our skin remains smooth and resilient in our youth. Elasticity provides the ability to "bounce back" after repeated movements. Years of facial expressions, exposure to excessive UV light and other damaging dietary or environmental factors really start to show when this elasticity is compromised."

Normally when I think of vitamin C, I think of oranges but it looks like bell peppers surpass oranges with the amount of vitamin C present.

To get the most nutrients from bell peppers, WHFoods.com suggest to saute lightly and to not over cook.

Did you know that bell peppers are higher in vitamin C than oranges?

Fresh Nutrient Dense Food for a Healthier Body!

Are there more nutrients in food grown in a rich soil? Should one even be concerned about this?

Last Saturday's visit to the farmer's market was a success. I met a representative at Gaia's Breath Farm who does biodynamic farming. The whole chicken that you see pictured here is from their farm. Biodynamic farming incorporates healthy soil practices and maintaining unison between the land and the animals.

There is a definite difference in taste from biodynamic farmed food versus regular organic and grass fed meat. It's very rich and heavenly. My guess is that if the soil is prepared to be nutrient dense then the harvested food will be as well. I can see how this can help improve one's health.

If you're looking to go BEYOND organic, try food from a biodynamic farm. You might be surprised at how tasty it is.

Super Quick Homemade Pickle Recipe

homemade pickle recipe

This fermented recipe was super easy to make. I made it in abt 15 mins before work yesterday morning.

Fermented foods are loaded with enzymes to aid in digestion, absorption, transportation & elimination of food.

It also has a higher content of vitamins and probiotics. You might not need to buy store brand enzymes and probiotics if you make your own fermented foods.

Recipe:
I used ingredients that I had currently available. Feel free to follow a traditional pickle recipe or create your own version.

* Kirby cucumbers

* Onions

* Garlic

* Mineral salt (Celtic sea salt, Himalayan crystal salt) FYI: pure white salt is void of minerals event if it says "sea salt". Mineral salt will have a color to it.
* Filtered or spring water

* Chop all ingredients to desired size.

* Place in air tight glass jar.

* Add approximately a teaspoon or less of salt depending on how big your jar is and how salty you want it. I used only a teaspoon and it ferments nicely. You can always add more salt to your individual serving if you'd like.

* Close lid and shake to mix.

* Push food down below the brine and allow for abt 1" of air space.

* Let sit for a few days on kitchen counter then transfer to refrigerator.

* Taste as you go along to make sure it's desired taste. With this hot weather it might ferment quicker than expected.

Super Easy!!!
Enjoy your own homemade probiotics and enzymes. Try exploring different recipes.

What's for Lunch? Saturated Fat

... I'll Have Lard with My Soup Please!

(soup with a healthy serving of lard)

A healthy serving of animal fat (lard, duck fat, tallow) or even coconut oil which is a saturated fat could just be the trick that you need to further optimize your health. Here are a few benefits of eating saturated fat which turns out to be healthy with daily consumption.

* Helps to improve digestion and is great for nutrient absrobtion

* Provides energy

* Helps to seal the lining of the gut (needed for leaky gut syndrome)

* Has vitamins A, D and K in an easy to a digest form

* Improves immune system health

* Has cholesterol which helps to develop and nourish our brains to function optimally

* Helps to build strong bones

* Holds up to heat well during cooking and will not go rancid

(a package of unrendered lard shown with a jar of rendered lard)

To further summarize, Jennifer McLagan author of “Fat: An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient, With Recipes” explains in a online interview entitled "Why You Should Eat Fat":

"Unlike vegetable oils, animal fats are very stable and don’t turn rancid easily. This makes them ideal for cooking, which involves heating the fat. And they have no trans fats.

It is much easier to roast a bird or a joint of meat if it has a good quantity of fat. The fat guarantees taste and succulence. Without it, the meat will be dry and tasteless.

Animal fats have lots of good fatty acids that fight disease, help absorb vitamins and lower cholesterol. Your body burns the short-chained fatty acids found in animal fats and stores the long-chained ones found in polyunsaturated fat. It is a myth that eating animal fat makes you fat.

Animal fat also has a good ratio of essential fatty acids. Many of us have a skewed ratio thanks to too much vegetable oil. When this ratio is out of balance, it results in illness and depression.

But best of all, fat — with its big round molecules — tastes good, it feels good in your mouth, on your tongue and it carries flavors.

So, if you haven't already, try exploring an animal fat in your next dish. You might be surprised at how tasty it is.

DEHYDRATION!–Is Lack of Water Causing You Problems?

...That's Health Problems. Are You Drinking Enough Water to Avoid these Symptoms?

Water is the staff of life. We've all heard this many times before but do we drink enough water to avoid dehydration and are we drinking it in the right way? Could it possibly help to heal us of nagging pain and disease?

Dr. F. Batmanghelidj came across the concept of the "The Water Cure" while a prisoner of war during the Iranian Revolution in 1979. He helped to treat prisoners with chronic dehydration cases such as peptic ulcer pain. The cool part is that he only had water to give them while imprisoned---no medications. He put them on a "water cure" routine and as you can probably guess, it cured them of the pain.

He helped to save many lives during his own lifetime with the discovery of the "magical" powers of water.

According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, we should drink half of our body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink approximately 75 ounces which is a little over 9 cups per day.

So how can we maximize our intake of water? Dr. Batmanghelidj explained on his website the secret:

"It is very important you balance your sodium intake with your water consumption. Take 1/4 teaspoon of salt per quart of water - every 4-5 glasses of water. Be sure to get sea salt. The best is Celtic sea salt or Himalayan sea salt, both of which are readily available at any health food store.

You should always drink water prior to eating, and after eating, to support the digestive process. The stomach depends on water to help digest food, and lack of water makes it harder for nutrients to be broken down and used as energy. The liver, which dictates where all nutrients go, also needs water to help convert stored fat into usable energy."

Dr. Batmanghelidj's site is very thorough and an interesting read. He lists several health problems that plague our society such as autoimmune diseases, arthritis, back pain, pain in general and migraines among other health challenges that are signs of chronic dehydration.

He goes on to say:

"Persistent dehydration inside some vital cells, in its extreme stages, will result in a number of disruptive conditions that have been labeled as different diseases - depending on the specialty of the "medical specialist" who first labels the problem.

...In short, when dehydration produces health problems, instead of correcting the dehydration and its metabolic complications, people are given toxic medications."

So let's not let dehydration get the best of us. All it takes is a slight change in routine to consume good quality salt before drinking water. If you're already on this kick, comment and let us know how it's working for you.

Carol Wachinak healed herself of a chronic disease when doctors could not help her. She came across the concept of drinking seedmilk (more on that later). Well what does this have to do with drinking water? She describes that before drinking the seedmilk, she does salt and water first. This helps to allow the cells to receive the hydration. If we don't use salt in conjunction with drinking water only our tissues are hydrated. In order to heal on a cellular level we must take the salt.

Personally, I feel that having salt before water is very hydrating. I just take a pinch of salt and let it dissolve on my tongue and then drink a cup of water.

So as we move into summer where dehydration can set in so quickly yes, hydrate your tissues but also hydrate your cells by consuming salt first.

Could Phytic Acid be the Cause of Your Stomach Bloating?

Does your diet consist of a lot of nuts, seeds, grains, beans and legumes? Do you have bloating or gas as a result?

If you're looking to optimize your health and relieve yourself of symptoms caused by eating the above mentioned foods without proper prepartion, then try this traditional tip.

Soak all nuts, seeds, grains, beans and legumes before consumption.

Take this even further and try fermenting after soaking or sprouting. It all depends on the dish that you want to create. Have fun using these traditional processing methods that are easy to implement. You and your family will receive the nutritional benefits that a few extra prep steps take.

In this post we're focusing on soaking. Soaking is a traditional process that takes us back to a time when our ancestors prepared foods to consume for the highest benefit.

(sunflower seeds soaking)

Yeah but, it's so much more convenient and quick to just buy a trail mix and eat raw nuts as is. Or, I'm making rice and beans tonight, mmmmmmm, mmmmmm---innocent and tasty but what could be the problem? With a simple prep the day before, you'll gain more benefits with your rice and beans.

So, what could possibly be the cause of bloating and gas after consuming the above mentioned foods without proper preparation?

Could it be phytic acid which?:
*binds to minerals in your body and creates mineral deficiencies

*inhibits enzymes in your body to do their job to help with food digestion

According to the research done at the Weston Price foundation in their article titled "Living with Phytic Acid" it's bought to light that there are other reasons why we may have the symptoms that we have with nuts, seeds, grains, beans and legumes that's not processed properly:

"Phytates represent just one of many anti-nutrients in grains, nuts, tubers, seeds and beans. These include oxalates, tannins, trypsin inhibitors, enzyme inhibitors, lectins (hemagglutinins), protease inhibitors, gluten, alpha-amylase inhibitors and alkylresorcinols.

Anti-nutrients exist in these plant foods because they are part of the process of life. The natural world requires them in order to perform many important tasks, including protection against insects, maintaining freshness of seeds for germination, and protection against mold and fungus. In order to consume these foods on a regular basis we must remove the phytates and other anti-nutrients through processing in harmonious ways."

Here's how to soak. Plan the day ahead for food that you want to consume the next day.

1) *Simply put your choice of nuts, seeds, grains, beans and legumes in a glass jar filled with the best water that you have and cover. I like to use a paper towel so that it will still get air and not ferment if not desired. Use enough water to allow for the food to expand.

2) Rinse the next day. Rinse approximately three times which seems to get the water clear enough.

3) Then follow your recipe as normal for cooking.

*Almonds---We let almonds soak for two days, changing the soaking water once per day and peeling and discarding the skin.

*Black Beans---We let soak for a full 24 hours.

It's very easy to optimize your diet and have it work more for you than against you with these simple steps. Personally, I've noticed that I don't have the stomach bloating problem that I used to have with eating commercial raw or roasted nuts and seeds. Now that I've been processing them myself, these foods have become my friends. When I'm out and about and have to resort to store bought snacks, I'll buy some organic dry roasted almonds and guess what? You can best believe minutes later, I'll have boating :(

Do the best you can and enjoy your food. Learn and employ techniques that will have you feeling good and looking good from the inside out!

Have Fun with Fashion!

Last weekend I decided to wear a vest that I designed way back in the day for my senior fashion design collection. For my project, I chose to create a men's wear line using different types of linen fabrics. The line had an edgy look but with the casual feel of linen.

For some reason, when I was donating the rest of the pieces of this collection to a clothing drive last month, I decided to keep this vest and I'm glad that I did. For all of those years it's been sitting in storage and now I've decided to wear it.

You never know when inspiration will come!

Here are a few snap shots from my senior fashion show at Marymount College in Arlington, VA back in '99! We really did Have Fun with Fashion back then :)

The vest that I've revamped is shown on the far left.

Want to Easily Add More Greens in Your Diet?

Summer is almost here! It's the perfect opportunity to eat more liquid foods. If you are looking for a way to easily add more greens in your diet for you and your family then check out this recipe.

Try making a blended salad! It's super easy to make. Just take the ingredients that you would normally put into a salad and blend them! It's that easy.

In this recipe, I used spinach, parsley, a half of lemon and only a few slices of onion. Be careful of using too much onions and garlic. Once blended, they're more potent...very strong!

Add a bit of water to make it the consistency that you wish and there you go! Top it with olive oil or even a dash of mineral salt.

One taste will perk you right up! Consume as much as you wish. Be creative and feel great knowing that you're getting your greens in an easy to digest way.

Enjoy!

Here's a Tip to Easily Keep Fermented Foods in Your Diet

I've had a nice break from blogging and now I'm anxious to share more Fun with Fashion and Healthy Life related topics.

One thing that I found valuable during my time away from blogging and tweeting is how important fermented foods are in my diet. I started to slack off with making fermented foods for about one month. During this time, I could tell that I didnt' feel 100% but, I could not put my finger on what I was lacking until I finally bought a jar of fermented carrot ginger mix from Union Square Market one Saturday.

As soon as I had some about ten minutes later, my body woke up! Seriously. I felt alive again. And a very important note is that during the time of no veggie fermented foods, my confidence started to slip. This might seem weird but, I had to post this to let you know that for some people food and psychology go hand in hand. Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride makes this relationship through her research and has labeled it GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome).

Here's the Tip:

If you're ever at a point where you don't have time to make your own fermented foods or you just need a break from making your own, I highly recommend Hawthorne Valley and Real Pickles brands of fermented foods. They both offer a good variety and they are local to NYC. So far, I've had their pickles, Kvass and carrot ginger fermented veggies. They are both tasty and organic.

So, if you're not in the mood for making your own fermented foods, buy these high quality brands and you won't miss a beat.

Underweight? Here's 3 Foods to Help Add Healthy Weight

Hi on this super, sunny Sunday! I'd like to share with you the top three foods that have helped me to gain weight.

I call these foods my friends because within a year and four months, I've been able to gain healthy weight. Now, fall and winter has been enjoyable! I haven't had cold hands since I've started incorporating these foods within the GAPS diet. These foods are all natural and traditional. When combined within a whole foods diet, these foods remind me of life's simplicities.

If you are looking to gain healthy weight then try adding these foods into your diet. The idea is that they help to heal and seal the gut which helps to repair your immune and digestive systems thus enabling you to put on healthy weight.

1) Sauerkraut or any variety of homemade fermented foods

2) Lard: buy from your butcher or from the farmer's market and render yourself or buy already rendered lard or any other pure animal fat (no additives or preservatives).

3) Marrow bones: Make bone broths which are very healing and nourishing. Use the broth to make all types of soups and stews.

Take a Break from Grains---It just might help you to gain weight

I think that one of the most beneficial things that one can do to gain healthy weight is to eliminate grains from one's diet while incorporating the above foods within a whole foods diet. Once you've reached a level of health that you approve of, add grains if wanted but properly prepared grains by soaking and fermenting.

I've mentioned grains because they contain phytic acid which inhibits mineral and nutritient absorption. So, while we're enjoying a tasty chicken sandwich on a delicious bun or wholesome bread, how much of what we are eating is actually being absorbed? In my case, I believe that over consumption of wheat and lack of animal fats and fermented foods contributed to my being under weight.

I have not had any type of grains within one year and four months. The last time that I had grains, I got a severe reaction. I believe that it was my ultimate overdose of grain consumption from childhood to that very day that had built up. One day after eating a rich dark whole wheat bread toasted, I got a stye in my right eye and my mood immediately changed to grumpy, annoyed and upset. Once my boyfriend and I figured out that these symptoms were from the wheat bread, we stopped eating wheat. We started the GAPS Intro Diet where no grains are allowed. The stye took about three months to go away and has not returned.

You may or may not have a problem digesting grains but one thing is for sure, properly preparing grains will give you more of a nutritional benefit as soaking and fermenting them helps to reduce phytic acid. Throughout my lifetime, I had been consuming grains heavily and I've also been under weight.

If you must eat grains, authors Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD highlight the process of properly prepared grains in their article, Be Kind to Your Grains...And Your Grains Will Be Kind To You.

"So the well-meaning advice of many nutritionists, to consume whole grains as our ancestors did and not refined flours and polished rice, can be misleading and harmful in its consequences; for while our ancestors ate whole grains, they did not consume them as presented in our modern cookbooks in the form of quick-rise breads, granolas, bran preparations and other hastily prepared casseroles and concoctions. Our ancestors, and virtually all pre-industrialized peoples, soaked or fermented their grains before making them into porridge, breads, cakes and casseroles."

Enjoy your whole foods diet and your weight gaining journey. And by the way, I'd just like to mention that eating healthy fats for over a year has not made me fat. I'd also like to add that my cholesterol level is average. Go figure!

It's Breaskfast Time!---Cooked Pears

Good Morning! What's for breakfast?

On this cold Sunday morning we're having cooked pears! ...Y-U-M-M-Y! But wait!!! What about loosing enzymes by cooking the fruit. Well, if you're incorporating homemade fermented foods into your diet then you are getting plenty of enzymes and probiotics from your variety of homemade fermented foods which are by the way a raw food.

The process of fermenting helps to break down the proteins, carbohydrates and fats so that the food becomes more digestible while providing more nutrients than some non fermented raw fruits and vegetables. Fermenting also produces beneficial bacteria which is needed to balance the gut flora which is necessary for a healthy immune and digestive system.

Cooking the fruit helps to break down the proteins so that it becomes more digestible. Susan Weed, herbalist and expert on women's health wrote a very interesting article on Nourished Magazine's website. The article is titled "Optimum Nutrition Cooked or Raw". She pointed out that the enzymes in vegetables and fruit are only available if the fruit or vegetable is fully ripened. I highly doubt that the organic pears at my local grocery store are fully ripened. They are not local which means that they are shipped from God knows where and are most likely picked before ripened.

Susan further explains:

"Cooked plants are far more nourishing than raw plants, whether we look at vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains or pulses (beans). Cooking not only breaks the cell wall, liberating minerals to our bodies, it actually enhances and activates many vitamins."

cooked pears for breakfast

Cooked pears is very delicious and easy to make. So let's have cooked pears for breakfast!

Here's the recipe:

* Chop fruit into bite size pieces.
* Add fruit to pot. Fill the pot with water, cover the pot.
* Turn up high to a boil then reduce heat.
* Cook for about 20 minutes or so until the fruit is soft to your liking.
* Top with a good animal fat of your choice for even more help with digestion. I chose leaf lard.
* You can also top with cinnamon if you'd like!
...and definitely have a nice serving of the broth. There's plenty of nutrients in the broth and Oh My Goodness it is so very tasty!

Enjoy Your Cooked Pears for Breakfast!

Gotta Love It! Vitamin D3's Benefits

Thanks for bearing with me through the periods of no posting as I've been super busy at my full-time job, doing my best to incorporate the strategies in one of my earlier posts Water, Beauty and Rest.

This new post is actually inspired by a comment that I left on Au Naturel's blog about the benefits of Vitamin D3 for EVERYONE. I commented on it from my own cultural's perspective but the sun gives life for ALL!

vitamin D3 & immune health

"As an African American, I never thought that vitamin D3 ---the sun was necessary that was until for the first time in my life last year, I had my D3 level checked. It was so low! I mean in the danger zone. Since then, I've been supplementing with 10,000 IU & higher and I've raised it to a normal level.

I think, how did I go through my whole life without this being checked? The only reason why I had it checked last year was not because of my doctor's suggestion but because my boyfriend said that it was important to check.

I believe D3 has helped to build my immune system along with my other daily healthy routines. I was the only one in my office this flu season who did not catch a cold or flu. There's definitely a need to spread the word about the benefits of D3 so thanks Au Naturel Health & Beauty for this post!

vitamin D3 & immune health

And for the African American community who do not live year round in the sun, I suggest that you get your D3 level checked. Having brown skin does not mean that we do not need the benefits of the sun. We need much more than we think...and taking a good D3 supplement is an easy way to achieve this. ...There's ton's of info about African American's low level intake of Vitamin D online."

I think the problem within my cultural community stems from the need to dispel old myths and lack of information shared about the benefits of the sun for overall health. I've been using the Carlson brand 10,000 IU's which is derived from cod liver oil. There is also vitamin D3 derived from lanolin (sheep wool oil). How are you getting your D3? The natural sun is the absolute best way and if that's not available then supplementation is key.

Winter is a Breeze with these Immune Building Tips

Just say no way to catching colds and the flu! Take the time to build your immune system so that you can Thrive during this winter season.

Building your immune system may not be an overnight fix. I started in October 2011 to take control and to rebuild my health. I am happy to report that I have not caught a cold or had a flu sense I've changed my lifestyle to be healthier.

So start today with these immune system building ideas and just say no way to catching a cold or flu:

Let's examine each of these tips so that we can clearly know the benefits:

Vitamin D3 From the sun or a capsule:
Research as shown that since our overall lifestyle is indoor based that we're loosing out on the benefits of the sun. The sun is life force that's not just for plants and animals. We need the benefits of the sun as well! A lack of sunshine can lead to a host of health issues. If your lifestyle is indoor based or you live in a region that lacks sufficient sunshine then it's best to supplement with a Vitamin D3 capsule. Of course the preferred method for obtaining D3 is directly from the sun.

Benefits:

*Boosts the immune system
*Has anti-cancer properties
*Builds strong bones
*Helps build better mood

Homemade Fermented Foods:
Well, you could buy fermented foods but there are not a lot of high quality choices in grocery stores. Fermented foods are easy to make and as I've said it several times on this site, it's definitely a super food.

Here's why:

*Helps to digest food
*Helps to absorb nutrients
*The fermenting process unleashes more vitamins than if the veggie or fruit was not fermented
*Helps to balance gut flora

According to Dr. Mercola, for optimal health we should strive for a ratio of 85% "good" bacteria and 15% "bad" bacteria. This can be achieved by simply eating homemade fermented foods on a daily basis. Dr. Mercola points out in one of his articles that:

"Historically, people didn't have the same problems with their gut health as we do today for the simple fact that they got large quantities of beneficial bacteria, i.e. probiotics, from their diet in the form of fermented or cultured foods, which were invented long before the advent of refrigeration and other forms of food preservation."

Your gut, brain and immune system are all connected. So if you are seeking to build your immune system then you'll definitely want to eat fermented foods!

Reducing chemicals:
This category affects our every day life because it's hard to escape chemicals 100%. Eating foods with chemicals, using household cleaners with chemicals and personal care products can affect in lowering our immune system. As boutique owner Anna Canngiano of Au Naturel Health and Beauty mentioned in her video interview with us back in November, "60% of what we put onto our skin is absorbed into our bodies at a faster rate than what we eat", so we have to shop smarter and really read the ingredients that are in the products that we use.

* What's your favorite deodorant?
* What type of household cleaners do you use?
* You look great in that lipstick but what's it made from?
* Does your favorite restaurant use filtered water and organic ingredients? Hmmmm
* What are we rubbing into our skins on a daily basis and breathing that is contributing to a weakening of our immune system?

Take the extra step and look up ingredients on the products that you currently use. A good website to reference is cosmetic database. You can search by brand or ingredient and find out the toxicity level and the harm that it can do to your body. You can also just type in the name of the ingredient in your browser to reveal a host of articles from various sources.

You can reduce the chemicals that you bring into your home by a very large percent by just choosing not to spend your money on products that can contribute to lowering your immune system. There are so many eco-friendly products made from naturally derived ingredients on the market. This also includes chemical free make-up. I've been using the Ecco Bella brand of lipstick for about three months now and I love it!

Seek healthier options for your daily living routines and you will see your health improve.

Eat a Whole Foods Diet:
I'm not speaking about the grocery store. I'm referring to buying foods that are not heavily processed which is basically an elimination of junk foods. Look up the ingredients that are listed on those bags of candy or box of donuts, even on that bottle of ketchup. Do we really want to digest Red Dye #40 and Yellow Dye #5? Can you imagine what consuming dye can do long term to our immune systems and to those of our children?

There are better choices, we just have to seek them.

Having a large grain based diet can also contribute to weakening your immune system because it contains inhibitors that can cause havoc in your system. Jeff Barnett of Cross Fit Impulse has a very easy to understand article about the detrimental affects of wheat. He explaines that wheat contains lectins which are proteins that we can not digest, can spike our insulin, has protease inhibitors and phytates that prohibit nutrient absorption.

Buying farm fresh from local farmers whom you agree with their farming practices is a great way to purchase produce and meats. Farming practices range from Biodynamics, Organic and Naturally grown to name a few.

So in order to build our immune system, we want to eat as clean of diet as possible without consuming foods like grains that are difficult to digest and foods with chemicals added to them.

...By the way when did it ever become acceptable in our culture to eat dyes and other poisons? I think I'll pass on the birthday cake with the fancy decoration and those cute little muffins with the sprinkles on top.

Natural Supplements
Supplements are necessary because, it is not always possible to obtain all of the nutrients from our diet. Just like vitamin D3, additional supplements should be added when needed and as desired. Having your blood tested to see where you stand is a great starting point to know what additions to your diet are needed.

Supplements to your diet to name a few such as spirulina, seaweeds, camu-camu (which is reported to have the highest level of vitamin C amongst plants) are ways to boost your immune system.

Start now to rebuild your immune system. Just say no to colds and the flu! Start little by little to make changes to your life that will benefit your health. A healthy life with a strong immune system is more than about the foods that you eat, it's also about the everyday products that you use.

Water, Beauty and Rest

Yes! Rest and hydration along with a nutritious diet are keys to beauty.

This post comes at a time when I have to tell my own self to stop---- and --- rest. If you've read my bio here, you know that in addition to my accessories business, I work full-time as a Product Development Associate for a well known women's apparel company.

With market week coming up in the first week of February, I'm working well over 50 hours per week which includes weekends. This can definitely take a toll on one's health and beauty.

(last Sunday...foggy morning on my way to work --- Times Square)

(7th Ave: the garment district looks empty but that's only because it's 8:30AM on a Sunday)

I noticed that when I stay up past midnight to do my personal tasks, it really ages me to the point where it shows on my face the next day...(I look much older). Now when I go to sleep around 10:30 - 11PM I look so much younger and feel refreshed. There's a definitely a big difference!

Also, when working so many hours we know that we should stay hydrated. Water helps with alertness so it's definitely a key for helping you to stay sharp throughout the day. Drinking water can also help to give your face a nice glow. Now who wouldn't want that?

So my tips for looking good and feeling good from the inside out while working long hours are:

-drink the appropriate amount of the best water that you have access to

-go to bed early enough so that you will not wake up looking and feeling tired

-a healthy well balanced diet of whole foods and any supplements that you think are necessary to help you achieve your health goals
